Update from the 2025 legislative session

The 2025 Maryland General Assembly Legislative session ended in early April. Delegates Joseline Peña-Melnyk, Ben Barnes, and Mary Lehman and I worked to:

Protect working families from Musk/Trump war on Maryland by: - Giving the State Attorney General the power to sue to protect earned Social Security, Medicare, and Veterans benefits.

- Creating a loan fund for laid-off Federal workers and contractors. - Strengthening protection of personal data and safety in churches, schools, hospitals, and public places for law-abiding immigrant families.

Curb utility rate hikes by:

- Providing residential electric customers with a rebate.

- Cracking down on cost overruns, private jets, and other profit-padding. - Making big tech data centers pay their fair share.

- Boosting lower-cost solar and battery storage.

Make Beltsville neighborhoods safer by passing laws that:

- Crackdown on organized crime stealing from neighborhood stores. - Boost penalties for gun theft and gun trafficking

Add $114 million more for Prince George’s schools.

Boost state funds by more than $29 million to fix potholes and improve local roads

Community Utilities and Resource Fair on May 12

The District 21 Delegation and County Councilmember Tom Dernoga will host a Community Utilities and Resource Fair on May 12 from 6 - 8 pm at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center at 7120 Contee Road. Senate and House college scholarships for Beltsville students

Delegates Joseline Peña-Melnyk, Ben Barnes, Mary Lehman, and I award college scholarships to Beltsville students each summer. Applications for the scholarships for the school year 2025-26 are posted on the 21st District Delegation website. The Delegates’ application will automatically go to Delegates Peña-Melnyk, Barnes, and Lehman. You will need to fill out a separate application for the Senatorial Scholarship.

In the meantime, please ensure you have a Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS) account at https://mhec.maryland.gov/ and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://studentaid.gov/.
