In last month’s edition, I introduced you to hometown inspiration Dior Ginyard to highlight the importance of playing sports. In case you missed the article, you can access it online at www.beltsvillenewstoday.com. I want to introduce you now to another local hero, Bryan Addis. Addis grew up in Beltsville playing baseball for the Beltsville-Adelphi Boys and Girls Club. He then played bas
eball for High Point High School where in 1990 his team was a state finalist in the Maryland 4A Baseball State Championship Tournament. His time playing for the Boys and Girls Club helped him develop a strong work ethic as well as teamwork, perseverance, and leadership skills that would formatively shape his future endeavors. While in college, Addis started volunteering for the Beltsville Fire Department. The skills he obtained during his youth along with firefighting training allowed him at the age of 21 to save a small boy from a townhouse fire in California. Addis was on his way to a wedding reception when he noticed the fire, and when he entered the home, the child was hiding in fear. In 1998, Addis graduated from the Prince George’s County Police Academy. Early in his career as a police officer, Addis prevented a man from jumping off a bridge into oncoming traffic. Currently, he is known in the community as Major Addis, serving as Commander of District 6 (Beltsville, Calverton, and the unincorporated parts of Greenbelt and Laurel). Knowing the life skills gained from playing sports as a youth, Addis encouraged his own twin sons to play sports starting at an early age, and they continue to do so now as juniors in high school.
T-ball, baseball, and flag football have been hard at practice. Games started the last weekend in April and will continue throughout most of June. In next month’s edition, I will report on the mid-season team standings as well as share some photos. Unfortunately, we did not have enough players registered or coaching staff to offer soccer this season. The Bulls will be at Beltsville Day on Sunday, May 19 from noon–4 pm. Stop by the club’s trailer and purchase some tasty food and snacks. Finally, to continue offering t-ball and baseball, the baseball program is raising money through a banner fundraiser. We are asking businesses and individuals to consider donating money and in return have their name proudly listed under the corresponding sponsorship level (platinum: $500+, gold: $250-$499, silver: $100-$249, and bronze: $50-$99) on a professionally designed and printed outdoor banner, which will be prominently displayed at home games and community events.
